The Ferrets Keep Coming...

August 7, 2025 - An anonymous Washington state Petco employee shared that they sell two ferrets a week — that’s 96 a year per store.

  • Washington has 49 Petco stores
  • Oregon: 25
  • Idaho: 11

That's 8,160+ ferrets sold in the PNW every year — and Petco isn't the only retailer.

So, where do they all go?

Too many end up in shelters like ours.

  • Pet surrenders are up 29–37% since 2021.
  • Overpopulation is at a crisis level.
  • And shelters are struggling to keep up.

At WFRS, we’re currently caring for 125 ferrets in our commercial facility. It costs approximately $50/month to provide one ferret with food, litter, bedding, vaccinations, and safe shelter.

That’s $6,250/month — just for the basics. (And it doesn’t include medical care or our foster care network.)

We rely 100% on donations. The average gift is $25.

That means we need 300 donors each month to maintain our current level of operations.

  • Can you help us keep our promise to ferrets like Macy?
  • $25/month = food & bedding
  • $50/month = full care for one ferret
